When I heard this model could be in a Black Box this I demanded that I’d be allowed to paint it. Ok, I begged again.
The only stipulation Bing gave me was I had to build it in the store which meant people handling it before it had time to fully dry/cure. It got knocked about quite a bit before I got to take it home (Note the missing beard extension). If I can’t find that missing piece I’ll have to putty over that hole.
I thought GW outdid itself with the Dark Eldar line. This new Tomb King stuff is nothing short of astounding.
Now that my disk/bases are done I’ve started to put them to use. The bases will get their debut here in a few days. My first (and easiest) project will be a new Herald of Tzeentch on a disk. I’m also designing some modularization into this project to allow me to transfer the disk/rider to a large base to serve as a chariot.
I sat down this weekend and hammered out a paint scheme for these resin disks of mine. I think it will take a few more attempts before I have something satisfactory but this design looks solid.
After painting, I mounted the disk on a Dragon Forge base I had waiting. 60mm Sanctuary in case you are wondering. Prior to painting a drilled/Dremel’d a two holes in the top and bottom to accommodate magnets for the rider and base. Unfortunately my dremel’ing was not level so the magnet set at a slight angle. It looks cool but it’s not ideal.
The Herald is made from the new plastic Pink Horror kit. I chose the champion and tweeked it to my liking. I added some brown apoxy putty to the bottom of his tail for the magnet. I filed it level and added the magnet. The polarity is aligned to the magnets installed in the acrylic rod of the base and the one in the disk. They should hold nicely.
The herald will be white so he stands out but I could not wash him on the disk so I set this little rig up.
Here’s the resin base I’ll be using for this new disk design. Again of Dragon Forge make, Temple 60x100mm this time. Damn I love his bases!!
I’ll need to place another resin base order this week come to think of it…
I was asked back in November if I could recreate the Blue Scribes conversion I did for a in-store tournament in September.
Unfortunately the answer to that is no. The broach I used for the disk in that conversion is likely gone forever. I’ve gone back to Michael’s no less then 10 times trying to find it without success. I don’t think they sell it anymore. So screw them! I’m making my own!
The Disk of Tzeentch is a mount akin to Khorne’s Juggernaut or Slaanesh’s Boobworm, but the disk model GW has released is very uninspired IMO. This conversion will allow me to give the disk the appropriate amount of painting attention I feel it deserves.
I know this design is not very demonic but my logic is solid. By GW’s own fluff, Sorcerers have to catch and transform a screamer into a new form in order to gain this mount. I’m going with an arcane flying platform to represent my disks which I feel is fitting for a servant of Tchar.
Here is my current master:
I’m ordering some casting resin and silicone rubber this week for my resin bases and this project.
My content posting has slowed down somewhat over the last few weeks but it has not been due to laziness. Well not entirely at least…
Here are 2 of the big baddies I’ve been working on for my demonic horde. I’ll have better pictures when they are done. My wife annexed the lamp I was going to use for extra lighting. I’ll need to get another one.
I’m also finishing up my old school horror unit (30 deep) and I have a unit of bloodletters that I must complete that I’m dreading (also 30 deep). I hate painting them! They never come out the way I want!
I’ve been a busy bastard lately. I looked at all the armies I own and realized that I have not had a completely painted army since ’04. Heresy! With this fact in mind I decided to focus on getting the one army that I have had sitting around 80% for years now complete; my Tzeentch Demonic Horde. I’ll post more on that later.
This conversion(?) came together while in Michaels. I had been looking for a suitable disk for the scribes for some time and found the perfect example in a cheap metal pendant in their beads aisle. The tome comes from the Covenant of Menoth, with some extra terrain bits I had kicking about.
I was going to add a slew of scrolls and crap around the disk as arcane clutter but changed my mind in the end. I felt it would be too distracting. I’m not finished with this piece. I still have to add the text into the tome as my Prima art pens have yet to arrive. I’ll then flat coat (Krylon Crystal Clear Flat) the model and pick out the gems in gloss varnish. The base comes from Dragon Forge’s Temple line. Thanks again Jeff. Love your work.
I tried to complete this for a Tournament at last Friday’s Vets night and I almost pulled it off. The model was well received but I placed poorly. Really poorly…
I was in my local GW shop and discovered that the Bloodcrushers that came in the black-box a few weeks back had not been painted. After chatting with the manager I was told that it was unlikely that they ever would be painted due to the staff having to crank out several units for the Isle of Blood box set.
Unacceptable!
Anyway, it took me a while to get these bastards done. The weather here in N. VA has been atrocious so getting them primed took forever. I based them with a lava theme (using cork sheets) the same as the Demon Prince.
I both hate and love these models; the Juggernauts were a joy to paint. I have not worked with metals in a very long time (years I think), and the patinaed bronze look was a real joy. The Bloodletters on the other hand I hate. For some reason I can never get these models to look the way I want. This fact has plagued me for years and that is why I never fielded them. I just can’t stand the red skin look people tend to gravitate toward but other skin tones don’t look right either.
So I’ve been eye-balling the sexy resin bases from Dragon Forge. Jeff Wilhelm produces what are (IMHO) the best resin bases on the market. I’ve always wanted to get my hands on some but never had the proper motivation to pick any up.
Back in early July Jeff released a flagstone themed set called Temple. As soon as I saw those I knew I had to have them for my DoC army but I didn’t know when I would get them. As if he could detect my indecision, he comes out with army starter deal where you can get a whole slew of bases on the cheap.
Since I was on a limited schedule I could not take the time I normally would to plot out every section of the piece. I’m proud of it, but I think I went in to many directions color-wise. I like to keep my palate limited. The NMM bronze did not come out fully to my liking either but I’ve yet to master that technique. If I could go back in time I would do the sword in a lava theme to tie the Prince to the base.
All nitpicking aside, I really had a blast painting this mini for my hobby shop. GW has outdone itself with this new kit.
For my Birthday last year my wife bought me two Forgeworld (FW) models I’ve been eyeing for a long time. The Great Spined Beast and the Khornate Demon Prince. Since I’ve had these models for so long I decided to paint one up for this Warriors of Chaos army project and use him as a Shaggoth.
Now I’m not an expert on Warhammer Fantasy history but I have no memory of the use of the term Shaggoth to represent a monster since GW attributed it to a large Dragon Ogre back in the 6th edition Beastmen army book. For my army, the term Shaggoth will characterize any large unnamed monster from the Chaos Wastes.
Great Spined Shaggoth – Done and done!
Dragon Ogre Shaggoth – Owned but needs a new paintjob
Great Spawn Shaggoth – (Aiming to get this for Christmas)
Not quite as Lovecraftian as some would like, but it’s a close as I can get.
I made the base from Acrylic Sheet. (More on this method to come…)
