Dark Eldar Project

Well I’ve been a busy bastard for the last several weeks. I decided to knuckle down ad get behind the Dark Eldar project I was developing since December.

I have not pinned down what I want to play with but it’s drifting towards an assault variant with fire support. I think I’ll run them like Daemons sans the random crap and the suckage.

The only real problem I’m having with this army is transporting it. I have nothing sensible to use to carry these vehicles and I have a SCORE of 40mm monsters that do not play well with the GW transport case. Looks like I’m going to have to invest in some Battle Foam.

I’m particularly happy at how the bases complement the paint scheme I choose. I wanted a simple textured dark base that would gel with the (mostly) monochromatic color palate. I recently made some 25mm bases for my infantry.

Here are some samples:

Big Hoss

I can’t get around how good this model looks. Nurgle styled painting has been a Everest of mine for years. Finally I know the method to making something look disorderly and orderly at the same time!

All credit goes out to Les Bursley of AwesomePaintJob. I found a video of him painting a Ultraforge Great Plague Demon (now OOP) and it filled in all the gaps in my painting style that was preventing me from painting Nurgle units.

Thank you Les!

I will be sending him a personal thank you via Dakka shortly.

I’m still working on Bubba, but Hoss is done. Painting Achievement Unlocked!

Moar Daemons!

Well my Daemon mojo continues. Here are some new additions.

Herald of Tzeentch

First up is the sorcerer I painted using one of the new Storm of Chaos sorcerers. I like the results, but I feel more could have been done with their armor. I may pick up 2 more for further attempts.

Nurgle Daemons WiP

Next up, Big Hoss and Bubba. I placed a Forgeworld order with some friends a little over a week ago and they arrived yesterday. Nurgle has always been difficult to paint for me because it requires a messy style to look good and that is the polar opposite of how I learned to paint. I try to paint neatly and stay within the lines; those rules don’t apply to Nurgle units so I’ve always avoided them. But no more! I will get this fat bastard done and he will look horribly awesome!

I’m also working on a template model for my Seekers. I’ve finished the mount but not the rider. I’ll post her when it’s up to snuff.

40K Daemons

~I had to recover my blog last night after an update killed my theme. So this is a repost.~

Well, it’s been a while and I’m back into painting. I kind of burned through that plethora of hobby mojo with my Tomb Kings army and knocked out a good 2200pts. I still have a great deal to do with that army but WHF isn’t doing anything for me at them moment.

To alleviate my boredom I’ve gone back to my old faithful army: Daemons (40K this time). I have been a fantasy buff for so long and found 40k boring but I have to say that Fantasy has gotten somewhat crazy at the moment and the game is not challenging anymore.

So I’ve been painting/playing Daemons lately for 40k and it’s been great. Here are few models that I’ve completed recently.

Herald of Tzeentch on Chariot

Herald of Tzeentch on Chariot

Here are two heralds I did using my my disk design. I was really happy on how they came out. I mounted them on my resin bases as well. Sadly the heralds I got for these two heralds came from the Blue Scribes conversion I made last year. I found the conversion broken in the case it had been resting in for months. The original herald I built for this project has been completed as well but I need to replenish my resin supplies so I can make more bases.

Here’s one of those new sorcerers from the Storm of Chaos WHF event. It makes for a damn good looking herald! I’m about to start on the second SoM Chaos Sorcerer to add him in as a herald. Can’t wait to get started on him.

Pink Horror Mock-up

Pink Horror Mock-up

Finally, here’s a Pink Horror I did as a mockup. Painting it was really easy so after I fine tune my process a little I think I’ll crank out a tutorial for painting them.

That’s all I have for right now. More to come as I progress.

What Motivates Me

I’d like to take a short detour from my TK project to write about what motivates me to build/paint and to display the work of two good friends of mine.

I started this hobby back in ‘98 while I was still in the Army. I remember coming up to DC from Ft. Bragg to visit my girlfriend (now wife) and for some reason or another we found ourselves at a GW shop in the mall. I remember being blown away by the incredible armies they had on display in the glass cases so I bought a box of those crappy Saurus and some paint and vowed to return one day. 13 years later, I still play at that store and the then manager James is a damn good friend of mine and one of the most unforgiving opponents I know.

James is a brilliant painter and most of my technique was developed from trying to replicate his style and he still astounds me to this day with his talent. Here’s some of his work:

Savage Orc Boar Boy

Savage Orc Boar Boy

My favorite part of this model is the boar. The skin is brilliant and the attention to detail by glossing the eyes and the tongue makes this little bastard spring to life. The Orc is also amazing. James paints like the old school Heavy Metal painters and it pisses me off at how easy it is for him. He now has a full unit of these sexy beasts by the way…

Dark Elf Lord

Dark Elf Lord

This Dark Elf Lord was painted for some tourney where everything had to be represented on the model. The Blood Armor is again brilliant. The saddest part of these models is that about 10 minutes after I took pictures someone knocked James’ case down and both got broken. The Boar Boy was easily repaired being plastic but the elf lord took all kinds of scratch damage. ☹

Last but certainly not least is this amazing terrain piece from my friend Michael (Chewie). Chewie is to terrain as James is to painting. It never ceases to amaze me what he does with board terrain. Here’s his “Rock of Aegis” (that name kills me! LOL!):

This beauty is for sale if anyone is interested. It does include the mounted guns by the way but we tend to take them off when he brings them into the store so they are not stolen/broken. Drop me a line if you have any interest and I’ll get you in contact with Chewie.

My hobby is driven by viewing the work of other hobbyists. Seeing someone crank out a badass model/unit or some inspired piece of terrain makes me want to paint/hobby myself. Find out what motivates you and use that inspiration to take your work to the next level.

Hobby Project – Herald on Disk/Chariot

With the Necrosphinx finished (sort of) it’s time to revisit a project I started back in February.

For the new readers – I came up with a new design for the Disk of Tzeentch as the current model is uninspired. After a few attempts, one successful, I came up with a design that I had to replicate. And I did!

I came up with an idea for a modular disk rider that can be converted to a chariot on a whim. If this works out, and it should, it will be pretty cool.

And since we are on the topic of Disk Riders here’s a new scheme/rider for a chaos mortal’s army that I’ve been playing with. (Aekold Helbrass was the coolest character evar…)

Resin base Début!

I mentioned back in Jan that the reason I decided to create my own bases was to show off two paint schemes that I was proud of. Well, here’s one of them so you can see some of the bases in action!

Dark Eldar Ravager
Dark Eldar Ravager

Dark Eldar Ravager

Since I went with a white scheme I wanted a minimalist base design that would not distract the eye. I installed a magnet into the bottom of the Ravager so I could mount it on top of an acrylic rod.

I’ll be posting more Dark Eldar stuff shortly. This paint scheme is easy-mode!

Hobby Project – Herald on Disk of Tzeentch Part I

Now that my disk/bases are done I’ve started to put them to use. The bases will get their debut here in a few days. My first (and easiest) project will be a new Herald of Tzeentch on a disk. I’m also designing some modularization into this project to allow me to transfer the disk/rider to a large base to serve as a chariot.

Herald on Disk/Chairot

I sat down this weekend and hammered out a paint scheme for these resin disks of mine. I think it will take a few more attempts before I have something satisfactory but this design looks solid.

Resin Disk & Base

After painting, I mounted the disk on a Dragon Forge base I had waiting. 60mm Sanctuary in case you are wondering. Prior to painting a drilled/Dremel’d a two holes in the top and bottom to accommodate magnets for the rider and base. Unfortunately my dremel’ing was not level so the magnet set at a slight angle. It looks cool but it’s not ideal.

Herald on Disk/Chairot

Herald on Disk/Chairot

The Herald is made from the new plastic Pink Horror kit. I chose the champion and tweeked it to my liking. I added some brown apoxy putty to the bottom of his tail for the magnet. I filed it level and added the magnet. The polarity is aligned to the magnets installed in the acrylic rod of the base and the one in the disk. They should hold nicely.

The herald will be white so he stands out but I could not wash him on the disk so I set this little rig up.

Dragon Forge Base

Here’s the resin base I’ll be using for this new disk design. Again of Dragon Forge make, Temple 60x100mm this time. Damn I love his bases!!

I’ll need to place another resin base order this week come to think of it…

Stay tuned!

Custom Disk of Tzeentch Part I – Master

I was asked back in November if I could recreate the Blue Scribes conversion I did for a in-store tournament in September.

Blue Scribes of Tzeentch
Blue Scribes of Tzeentch

Blue Scribes of Tzeentch

Unfortunately the answer to that is no. The broach I used for the disk in that conversion is likely gone forever. I’ve gone back to Michael’s no less then 10 times trying to find it without success. I don’t think they sell it anymore. So screw them! I’m making my own!

The Disk of Tzeentch is a mount akin to Khorne’s Juggernaut or Slaanesh’s Boobworm, but the disk model GW has released is very uninspired IMO. This conversion will allow me to give the disk the appropriate amount of painting attention I feel it deserves.

I know this design is not very demonic but my logic is solid. By GW’s own fluff, Sorcerers have to catch and transform a screamer into a new form in order to gain this mount. I’m going with an arcane flying platform to represent my disks which I feel is fitting for a servant of Tchar.

Here is my current master:

I’m ordering some casting resin and silicone rubber this week for my resin bases and this project.

Bloodcrushers Mk2

I was given the Bloodcrushers & Daemon Prince I did for my local Hobby Shop back in August. But I needed to re-base them so they would fit into my army.

After some internal debate I decided to re-base them for 40k. I really prefer Flamers in WHF and really had no interest in building and painting another 3 or so crushers to fill this unit out. Besides they look really cool on the round bases. I used the 60mm rounds from Dragon Forge’s Sanctuary line.

Again, MAD respect to Jeff Wilhelm. Love his work!
